By developing innovative solutions such as digital twin technology for real-time process optimization, advanced robotics for automated logistics, and augmented reality (AR) training for upskilling employees, this collaboration strengthens the link between technology, education, and business. This initiative supports companies at BIC and has the additional goal of addressing the growing shortage of technical talent by creating attractive careers in the manufacturing industry.
Technology, education, and business come together
The three partners each bring their own expertise. Cisco provides the technological foundation, including private 5G, edge computing, and secure AI infrastructure. NTT DATA focuses on AI, system integration, and smart production processes. Brainport Industries facilitates the Factory of the Future Experience Center and acts as a host and ecosystem manager, connecting educational institutions and businesses to stimulate open innovation.
Acceleration of innovation in the Netherlands
"Brainport stands for innovation, collaboration, and developing the talent that realizes the future of the manufacturing industry. The Experience Center, equipped with an NTT DATA Private 5G network based on Cisco technology, is a powerful boost for our ecosystem," says John Blankendaal, managing director of Brainport Industries.
"With this lab, we bring together technology, knowledge, and talent to make the manufacturing industry in the Brainport region resilient and future-proof," says Jeroen van Hamersveld, managing director Netherlands at NTT DATA. "We want to make AI and automation tangible and accessible for everyone in the sector. By leveraging global expertise locally, we accelerate innovation in both the region and the whole of the Netherlands."
Paul van der Weijden, country digital acceleration director at Cisco Netherlands, adds: "AI starts with a secure and reliable network. Only Cisco combines advanced networking technology with integrated security, insights, and collaboration. Together with NTT DATA, we connect technology with education and build a strong, sustainable, and resilient Dutch manufacturing industry."
Opportunities for students, SMEs, and start-ups
The Brainport Industries Campus is a leading international hotspot where more than fifty high-tech manufacturing companies and three educational institutions collaborate on innovation, production, and talent development. The new lab offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience with technologies such as AI and private 5G, and actively contribute to industrial innovations.
SMEs and start-ups also benefit from access to advanced technology, shared facilities, and the knowledge of technology partners. This lowers barriers to innovation and creates new applications such as drone and AGV-driven logistics, AR training, and digital twins – all building blocks of the 'Factory of the Future'.
