With modern smartphones, high screen time is not necessarily surprising. These devices serve as all-in-one workstations: communication tools, cameras, navigation systems, calendars, creative tools, and entertainment platforms. The nuance that is increasingly being made is that screen time does not solely have negative effects. On the contrary: when used consciously, digital screen time can actually yield demonstrable benefits.

A month a year on the screen

Various studies show that we are active on our smartphones for an average of two to three hours a day. Combine that with the fact that we unlock our device about seventy times a day, and the total adds up to about a full month per year of screen use. For a long time, the focus was primarily on the risks: reduced concentration, sleep problems, and digital dependency.

However, there is a growing understanding that these figures can also be interpreted differently. It is not the amount of screen time itself that is decisive, but its nature. Passive scrolling and endlessly consuming have a different effect than purposeful use for work, learning, or creation. This shift in perspective is crucial to place screen time in a more realistic and balanced framework.

Digital Creativity as a Skill

Especially among children and young people, screen use and interaction now play an important role in creative development. And not necessarily a positive one - children may actually struggle more to be creatively independent due to screens.

But that is not all there is to it. Digital tools for drawing, music production, photography, and storytelling stimulate skills that are also valuable outside the screen. Think of problem-solving thinking, visual communication, and narrative insight.

An interactive game, design app, or digital puzzle can be just as challenging in content as traditional learning materials. The key lies in guidance and context. When parents or caregivers are actively involved and discuss usage, screen time becomes a shared experience rather than an isolated activity. This not only enhances understanding but also reflection on what is created or learned digitally.

Hyper Attention and Deep Attention

A common concern is that screens undermine our concentration. However, scientists make an important distinction between hyper attention and deep attention. While deep attention revolves around prolonged focus - for example, when reading or analyzing - hyper attention demands quick switches and short, targeted attention.

Many digital applications train precisely that latter form. Think of real-time games, interactive interfaces, or quickly filtering information. In a world where information overload is the norm, the ability to respond quickly and prioritize is becoming increasingly relevant. Screen use can actually sharpen this skill, rather than weaken it.

Problem-Solving Ability and Transferability

Research also shows that digital learning is not inferior to physical alternatives in cognitive terms. Children who solve online puzzles or practice chess strategies, for example, effectively apply this knowledge in offline situations. Digital skills thus prove to be surprisingly transferable.

The advantage of digital tools is also their accessibility. They are always available, scalable, and flexibly deployable, without the need for physical materials. This makes screens not only practical but also efficient within learning and development processes.

Balance Remains Essential

There are certainly positive effects of screen time, but that does not mean that boundaries are unnecessary. Alternating with physical movement, social interaction, and moments of rest remains essential. Notably, researchers are increasingly pointing out the role model function of adults. The digital behavior of parents and caregivers appears to be strongly correlated with that of children.

Conscious screen use therefore does not start with restrictions but with consistent behavior and clear agreements. By actively integrating screen time into the daily rhythm - rather than banning or ignoring it - space is created for healthy digital habits.

The Positive Effects of Screen Time

Screen time is not a fixed problem, but a tool that needs context and direction. With conscious use and in balance with other activities, digital screens can contribute to creativity, concentration, and cognitive development. Not only among children but also among adults who are daily dependent on technology.

The challenge lies not in less screen time, but in better use. Those who use screens as a means for development, communication, and creation harness the positive effects of screen time and get the most out of an indispensable part of modern life.
