Previously, Google was mainly dependent on third parties for its hardware, with the most well-known example being the Nexus line of Android smartphones. With the Pixel line of smartphones, developed by Google in collaboration with HTC, Google started to take a more independent direction. The Pixel line was, more than the Nexus line, branded with the Google name.

The acquisition of part of HTC's mobile division is an acquisition that seems to indicate even more than the previous collaborations with HTC a hardware course that Google has begun to pursue. Smart, because with the first Pixel smartphone, Google has gained a good understanding of how to strongly position its own Pixel brand in the market. By expanding its own mobile division with the expertise of HTC, Google strengthens its position in the hardware arena.
Android is an OS for everyone, so that is not where the profit lies for Google. In fact, a layperson does not even see Android as a Google OS. Logically, it is an open platform that each brand customizes with its own style. This does not benefit the Google brand or at least ensures that Google has little to no advantage from it. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy line are indeed strong brands.
Google focuses more on hardware
It also seems that Google will focus even more on hardware in the future than it already does. This is also what Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Hardware at Google, hints at when he writes: 'These are still the early days of Google's hardware business. We focus on our core capabilities while simultaneously creating a portfolio of products that provide people with a unique and enjoyable experience by combining the best of Google's software – think Google Assistant – with well-designed hardware.'
In short, Google is going to focus more and more on hardware. The acquisition of part of HTC's mobile division is a first step for Google. We are curious about what steps will follow.
