Google Spaces
In fact, Google Spaces is what Google+ is also trying to be: a social media platform where people can easily share content with each other. However, Google+ has to compete heavily against other platforms like Facebook, despite a large portion of internet users having a Google account and thus also a Google+ page.
Still, Google is making another attempt to set up a social media platform with Spaces, both an online platform and accessible via an app for Android and iOS. Unlike other platforms that primarily focus on the individual, Spaces is about groups. The idea is simple: you create a space, a Space, with a specific topic. You add people to it who then continuously receive updates when someone adds something to the space. This can be images, but also articles or videos. Adding content is easy, as Google Search, Chrome, and YouTube are built into the app.
Sharing via Google Spaces
Earlier this year, there was already a closed beta for Google Spaces. Although we do not immediately see the added value of Google Spaces, we can imagine that it is a potential replacement for WhatsApp and Facebook groups. The big advantage is, of course, that Google Search, Chrome, and YouTube are already built in, so you don't have to leave the app to share media-rich content.
What Google further plans to do with Spaces is not yet known. However, the company promises that there are 'some surprises' in store for those attending Google I/O this week and who have installed the app. Google Spaces is now available for download for Android and iOS.
