Product Protection as a Basic Requirement

Temperature stability, shock absorption, and hygiene are the key concepts when it comes to maximum product protection during shipping. A constant temperature during storage and transport must be guaranteed when sensitive goods need to arrive undamaged at the recipient.

To prevent mechanical stress from affecting the product, effective shock absorption is essential. Vibrations, shocks, and pressure loads are hardly avoidable in logistics practice and can quickly lead to damage without suitable packaging. At the same time, hygiene also plays a crucial role, especially for sensitive products such as food or pharmaceutical goods.

In practice, EPS boxes have proven to be a reliable packaging solution. They combine a high insulation value with excellent shock absorption and are also moisture-resistant and shape-retaining.

New EU Regulations Force Retailers to Reconsider

Retailers often face a major challenge when choosing their shipping materials: sustainability or product protection? Costs also play an important role, as high-quality packaging solutions must remain economically viable. Especially in e-commerce with high volumes, rising material, storage, and transport costs can quickly become a decisive factor.

With the entry into force of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in August 2026, an additional aspect comes into play: stricter legal requirements for packaging. The regulation applies throughout the EU and obliges retailers and producers to make packaging recyclable, reduce material use, and focus more on the circular economy.

The consequence is that packaging materials must be evaluated more critically and adjusted where necessary. Additionally, existing logistics and packaging processes will also need to be re-examined, which may lead to investments and strategic choices to comply with regulations while remaining competitive.

Outlook: How Packaging Solutions Will Develop in the Future

Experts predict that revenue growth in e-commerce will remain limited in the coming years. For some product categories, online shopping may even decline. Customers are becoming more price-sensitive and are increasingly re-evaluating their consumption behavior. Sustainability, delivery costs, and return conditions play a larger role in the purchasing decision than a few years ago. At the same time, expectations regarding service and shipping are increasing. Products must not only be delivered quickly but also safely and environmentally consciously.

For retailers, this development means a clear shift in thinking. Optimized packaging solutions can be an important lever to combine service quality and cost efficiency. By using custom packaging, unnecessary empty space during transport is avoided. Shape-retaining shipping solutions also save on filler material and ensure product quality.

This can lead to less transport damage and returns. This has a direct positive effect on profitability and exposes seemingly "cheap" packaging solutions as short-term thinking. Every avoided damage and every saved return not only reduces costs but also the ecological footprint.
